To him, hiding was a mental condition, a state moulded in his mind. Early experiences enabled him to quickly realise that if other people held a certain conception of him – friendship, fascination, sympathy, hatred – and he attached importance or relevance to it, then that conception would become tangible and the danger real. Together, he and his mother learned to recognise the dangers and devised strategies for avoiding them.
