I was very young when I first heard this song.
Quite probably I would not have known of it at all if I had not been introduced to David Bowie by my uncle/brother Spencer who, in later years, came to know him professionally as well as socially.
The story it tells applied to me at the time. It was a cruel period in my life and I withdrew to live amongst the madmen, who were mostly of my own making. I soon discovered it was the sane who were locked up while the lunatics ran the asylum ~ nevertheless, I was comfortable there.
