How does it feel to quietly kneel? ~ Imagine you live an ordinary life, happy in your daily routine ~ taking your kids to school, going to work on a commuter bus, grocery shopping, cleaning the house, fixing the gate, Facebooking friends, going out on the town. Then imagine your world blown apart, into a million tiny pieces, everything taken from you in a heartbeat ~ your mother, father, wife, husband and children their naked bloody limbs raking the dust, stripped of flesh.
Then imagine what might go through your mind as you quietly kneel in dust hanging your head and waiting for the blade to fall.
Douleuma?* ~ More than 200,000 Syrians have been killed and 11+ million others forced from their homes in four years of armed conflict which began innocuously enough with anti-government protests before escalating into a full-scale civil war.
It seems to me the struggle is no longer ideological ~ a battle between the repressive, self-seeking state and common citizens demanding democracy ~ No! Syria has become a deadly playground where psychotic murderers can act out their most gruesome fantasies with impunity.
* Douleuma is a classical Greek word meaning something like toy, plaything or slave. The word is often used to describe a body which may be used and abused in any way imaginable.
